Time to get Western

January 4, 2013 - Las Pampas, Argentina

Today was going to be awesome. I just knew it. We were on our way to the estancias. That is a farm on the pampas. Pampas are flat lands that have no bumpy areas or mountains nearby. In Spanish pampas mean (flat land). On the way we passed Rio del plata, that's the largest river in the world. The Rio del plata is 44 kilo meters wide.

Finally we got to estancia. We got greeted by the gauchos. That means cowboy in spanish. They were balloon pants, button shirts, a rag over there shoulder, ropes, a gun, boots, and coins. That is there full outfit. They even put a fancy chain bridle on the horse.

After we got greeted we went horse back riding. I was so excited but apparently my horse was not. I had a bunch of fun but my horse kept kicking and stopping while I was on it. I called him stubborn.

We went on a long path in a circle. The horses all would kick the sand and shake when there was a bug. My dads horse almost knocked him off. It saw a stick and thought it was a snake. Sadly the ride was almost over. Well not for me, when we were support to get out the gate on a horse, my horse just stopped in the middle. Luckily a gaucho helped me leave the gate. Then I went to feed the horse. I gave it an apple and it chewed it with its big yellow teeth.  He slobbered all over my hand. GROSS!

Now it was time for lunch. I knew it because a cowboy bell rung. We walked into a big room. There was a wooden grill and they were cooking stakes. The most stakes I have ever seen!

Next I walked into the cafeteria. It had no doors and was made from wood. This really reminded me of the Hawaiian luau. Then came the food. I tried a steak. It was the best I have ever had, it was juicy and sweet. Actually Argentina is known for their amazing steaks. Then came a big piece of morcilla. It was very good, until my mom told me it was sausage that was made from cow blood, YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

Afterwards, I drank herba mate.

Then came the show. Now it was really like a luau. There were two people on stage dancing tango. It was relaxing and beautiful, some people even started dancing out of there seats. Then a man played an accordion.  He even started to sing.

Then me and my sister got out of our chairs and hopped on stage. We started dancing. We did cart wheels, splits and also danced western style. At the end the man thanked us and called us ballerinas. That made me a little shy.

Next we went to the horse show. There was one horse with a bell and all the other horses followed. There was even a dog chasing them, it was a lot like the sheep dog in New Zealand. The horses went very fast in circles and even cantered.

At the end one of the gauchos came up to me and gave me a ring with a small bow that had the Argentinian flag on it. Then he told me to kiss him but I didn't.  I did not want to at all!  I thanked him for the ring.  I guess it was a sign of friendship and then just left.

I wondered were were the rest of the cattle.  There was only horse and no cow. Actually the cow is a very important animal in Argentina because it gives us meat, milk, and leather clothes.

Today was a great day.
Tomorrow might be better.

We are going to visit a famous artist and interview him. I have so much more to say but I don't want to give it all away. I guess you will have to read my blog tomorrow to find out.
